ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. -- The GW baseball team split a doubleheader at St. Bonaventure on Friday afternoon and will go for a series victory in game three on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
The Colonials (23-18, 9-5 A-10) bested the Bonnies (9-23, 5-10 A-10) in game one of Friday's doubleheader before dropping game two. Isaiah Pasteur extended his program-record hitting streak to 29 games by tallying two hits in game one and three in game two.
GAME 1: GW 5, ST. BONAVENTURE 2
Jaret Edwards turned in a dandy with 7 1/3 innings on the hill, surrendering just two unearned runs while striking out six and walking one. The sophomore right-hander surrendered just five hits before giving way to Will Kobos, who recorded his fifth save of the season with 1 2/3 scoreless, including four strikeouts.
The Colonials fell behind 2-0 after the first inning when the Bonnies took advantage of a fielding error, along with two doubles, to take the early lead. Edwards (3-0), though, shut them down from there, helping GW turn the tide. Single runs in the third and fifth innings tied it up, and the Colonials took the lead on Dominic D'Alessandro's solo homer in the sixth. They plated single runs in the seventh and eighth to provide the final margin.
At the plate, Mark Osis had a three-hit game, while Pasteur, D'Alessandro and Steven Barmakian contributed two apiece.
GAME 2: ST. BONAVENTURE 8, GW 5
Game two followed a similar script, except this time around it was the Bonnies who overcame an early deficit. Pasteur led off the game with a solo home run, and GW pushed its lead to 3-0 in the second inning on a two-run single from Barmakian, but St. Bonaventure responded by plating eight runs between the fourth and seventh innings to take control.
The Colonials attempted to mount a late rally with Pasteur driving in a pair of runs in the eighth to cut the deficit to 8-5. A two-out single from Robbie Metz loaded the bases, but the Bonnies were able to quell the threat by inducing an inning-ending flyout.
In the ninth, GW again threatened when it put two on with two outs, but the Colonials were unable to muster a run. For the game, GW held an 18-9 advantage in hits but left 12 on base to St. Bonaventure's six. Nate Fassnacht was 4-for-5, while Pasteur and Matt Cosentino had three hits apiece.
On the mound, Elliott Raimo was tagged with the loss after giving up four runs on five hits in 4 1/3 innings. He struck out five and walked two.
