Colonials welcome Tigers to open three-game stretch at the Smith Center
WASHINGTON - After two weeks away from home, GW returns to the Smith Center for the first of three consecutive home games on Tuesday night, hosting local rival Towson. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. with the game being broadcast on ESPN+.
DAUNTING SCHEDULE: GW has faced the third-toughest schedule among A-10 teams, ranking 73rd nationally in strength of schedule. Only Dayton (24) and Fordham (48) have seen a tougher slate. Based on the most recent RPI announced by the NCAA Monday, GW has faced three teams (NC State - 5, Maryland - 103, Georgia Tech - 116) in the top 120. Two more of its remaining non-conference foes (Villanova - 100 and South Florida - 62) rank in that group, as well.
BAUTISTA NAMED ALL-TOURNAMENT: Senior point guard Mei-Lyn Bautista was named to the Cancun Challenge All-Tournament team following her tremendous performances against Georgia Tech (18 points / 6 assists) and NC State (19 points / 3 assists). She hit five threes in each contest, matching her career high, and was efficient as well, connecting at a 40 percent clip (10/25).
FINDING THE THREE-POINT STROKE: Overall, GW hit 21 triples against the Jackets and Wolfpack in 56 tries (37.5 percent). In the first four games of the year, the Colonials connected on a combined 17 threes and shot 24.6 percent from beyond the arc (17/69). Thursday's 10 three-pointers was the first double-digit effort for GW since making 10 against UMass on Feb. 14, 2018. Friday's 11 long balls marked just the eighth time in Jen Rizzotti's 69 games as GW head coach that the Colonials made 10-plus threes, and the first time ever in back-to-back games. Additionally, the 11 trios hit against NC State were just two shy of the school record of 13, done on five separate occasions.
FOULS ARE FEW AND FAR BETWEEN: The Colonials yielded a season-high 15 free throws to Georgia Tech on Thursday, the first game GW has allowed double-digit attempts all season. GW has allowed only 52 free throws to opponents so far this year while attempting 74 of their own. GW's 10.4 percent opponent's free throw rate (FTA/FGA), is the 10th-best mark in the nation, per Her Hoop Stats. The lack of fouling has been a hallmark of Rizzotti's defensive structure, as her team ranked 21st in the nation last year with just 14.1 fouls per game. This season, GW is committing just 12.3 fouls per game, sixth in the NCAA. The Colonials have been called for 16 or fewer fouls in each game thus far.
