Three Colonials establish new career-highs in scoring
WASHINGTON - When Towson came to GW on Tuesday night, it appeared that the Colonials' schedule relented a bit after a brutal opening six games that saw GW play three conference favorites to open the season and two Power Five programs in Cancun, Mexico last week. Towson, however, coached by old friend Diane Richardson, was game from the jump to try to make this one a barnburner.
GW had make-up work to do early as it fell behind 5-0 and 7-2 before the Colonials went to work. Neila Luma netted six in the quarter with the help of a perfect 4-of-4 effort at the free throw line, while Kelsi Mahoney got her shot going early with a three-pointer and an aggressive drive to the bucket to net five in the opening stanza as GW led at the quarter pole, 19-16.
The second quarter saw the lead change hands several times in the opening minutes, before four straight points from Sarah Overcash gave GW a 25-22 lead that it wouldn't relinquish. Luma ended the first half with 10, en route to her game- and career high 18 points, while Overcash netted seven of her nine points in the first 20 minutes. It was first-year Maddie Loder, though, who sent the Colonials into the halftime locker room with all of the momentum after draining a 26-foot buzzer-beating three to give the home team a 38-31 halftime edge.
The second half saw GW slowly extend its lead, reaching 19 at its largest late in the third quarter, as the chirpy Tigers were ultimately silenced. Three Towson technical fouls told part of the story, and GW's defense told the rest as the Colonials tamed the Tigers' leading gun. Kionna Jeter entered play for Towson ranked seventh in the nation with 24.6 points per game, while her team averaged 74.4 points per contest before coming to Foggy Bottom. GW held Jeter to 17 points on 20 shots from the field (1-of-10 3pt. FG), while turning her over five times out of Towson's 18 miscues. As a team, Towson finished over 11 points under their average after shooting at a .328 clip in the contest. The Tigers became the sixth of GW's seven opponents to be held under their season scoring average.
GW got 29 of its points at the charity stripe, paced by Luma who was money at the line drilling 12-of-14 freebies. Loder also got into the fun at the free throw line with a 7-of-9 effort en route to her career-high 15 points. Fellow first-year Kayla Mokwuah also enjoyed a career-best outing in a 12-point effort in 14 minutes of action. She also swatted four Towson shots away.
Mei-Lyn Bautista did what Mei-Lyn Bautista does, controlling the game from her point guard position with 12 points, season-high seven assists and six rebounds in a fundamentally flashy performance over the full 40 minutes of game time.
GW (2-5) will now take the rest of the week off from competition before hosting Monmouth on Sunday, December 2nd at 2 p.m.
