Men's Tennis Returns to Navy for Blue Invite

WASHINGTON -Â For the second time this fall, GW men's tennis is set to take part in a tournament hosted by the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. The Blue Invite opens on Friday and continues Saturday and Sunday.
LAST TIME OUT:Â GW's nine competitors participated in 51 matches across three days at the Joe Hunt Invite two weeks ago. First-year Zicheng Zeng advanced to the singles finals of the A flight, collecting a runner-up finish. Fellow first-years Ryan Navarro and Hanyu Liu claimed the Orange A Doubles Flight title with a 5-0 round-robin record.
ACROSS THE NET:Â The Colonials will see three repeat teams from the last event, squaring off with Navy, Delaware, and George Mason yet again. Georgetown and Harford Community College will also participate.
FORMAT:Â The tournament will follow a flighted format in singles and doubles with players guaranteed at least three matches.

EARLY IMPRESSION:Â GW posted an 18-13 mark in singles play at the Joe Hunt, led by four players (Dennis Afanasev, Navarro, Lawrence Sciglitano, and Zeng) going 3-1. The Colonials were 13-7 in doubles competition, headlined by Navarro and Liu.
A YOUNG SIDE:Â GW has seven first-year players this year, all of whom competed at the Joe Hunt Invite. The septet was a combined 14-9 in singles play while the three first-year doubles pairing went 12-3.
