ARLINGTON, Va. - Needing a win on the final day of the regular season to ensure a spot in the upcoming Atlantic 10 Championship, the George Washington baseball team took care of business with a 5-1 win over Saint Joseph's on Saturday afternoon at Tucker Field.
The win clinches a spot in the field of seven for next week's A-10 Championship, May 24-27, at Saint Louis' Billiken Sports Complex. Full championship details, including seeding and opening-round schedule, will be announced later this evening.
The Colonials will return to the A-10 Championship for the third consecutive season, seeking the program's fifth A-10 Championship after winning the conference tournament in 1979, 1989, 1992 and 2002.
Freshman Elliott Raimo turned in another fine performance on the mound. He carried a no-hitter into the fourth inning, ultimately allowing just one earned run on three hits with three walks and seven strikeouts over 6.2 innings of work. He was in control for much of the game, twice stranding two-out extra-base hits in the fifth and sixth.
After a scoreless first inning the Colonials plated a trio of runs in the bottom of the second. Freshman Nate Fassnacht started the scoring with a towering home run over the scoreboard in right-center field for his fifth long ball of the season.
Consecutive singles by junior Robbie Metz and Mark Osis, followed by a double steal and a walk from senior Eli Kashi loaded the bases before a run-scoring walk by Bartosic made the score 2-0. A RBI single moments later by senior Andrew Selby extended the lead to 3-0.
After blanking the Hawks in the middle innings, Raimo opened the top of the seventh with a strikeout before yielding a walk. He got the next batter to line out to right field before issuing his second walk of the inning with two outs. Senior Eddie Muhl entered in relief and gave up a base hit that allowed a run to come in to score but retired the side to keep the Colonials in front, 3-1.
GW got the run back in the next half inning when senior Andrew Selby roped a one-out triple to the gap in right center field and senior Cody Bryant lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to score Selby and push the lead back to three runs at 4-1.
The Hawks worked consecutive walks to open the top half of the eighth. Sophomore Will Kobos entered in relief and got a pair of strikeouts and a line out to end the threat and maintain the 4-1 lead.
The Colonials added a big insurance run in the bottom of the eighth after loading the bases with one out. Bryant came to the plate with two outs and dropped a RBI single into left field to extend the lead to 5-1.
Kobos worked a perfect ninth inning to clinch the game, earning his third save of the season.
Selby, Campbell, Fassnacht and Osis all finished with two hits apiece to pace the offense on the day.
