PHILADELPHIA - Junior Brady Renner allowed one run over five innings and senior Eddie Muhl threw four innings of scoreless relief to lead the George Washington baseball team past La Salle, 3-1, in Friday's series opener at Hank DeVincent Field.
Renner earned his team-leading seventh win of the season after he surrendered just one run in his five innings of work. He struck out two with three walks but was never truly threatened.
Junior Robbie Metz provided the first run of the day in the top of the second inning with a RBI single, one of his team-best three hits on the day.
La Salle pulled even in the bottom of the fourth on an infield RBI single against Renner but the Colonials moved ahead for good in the top of the fifth when Metz tripled and scored on a squeeze-bunt RBI from junior Matt Cosentino.
The Colonials picked up an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth when senior Bobby Campbell led off with a walk and moved to third on a double by freshman Nate Fassnacht. Junior Brandon Chapman then squeezed home Campbell to extend the lead to 3-1.
Muhl took the ball to start the sixth and was dominant across four shutout innings. He was only briefly threatened after a pair of two-out singles in the seventh inning but turned away the threat. He struck out four over the four innings of work for his 10th save of the year.
GW aims for its third consecutive A-10 series win in Saturday's middle game. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
