WASHINGTON - The George Washington men's tennis team was edged by Atlantic 10 foe Richmond on Saturday, 4-3, at the GW Tennis Center on the Mount Vernon Campus.
The Colonials (14-6) nearly staged a comeback after dropping the doubles point, but Richmond clung on in singles play for the win, snapping GW's stretch of five consecutive victories.
After taking the early point, Richmond (21-2) began singles play with wins at Nos. 6 and 1 to take a 3-0 lead.
Junior Christos Hadjigeorgiou started the comeback attempt, taking a straight-set victory at No. 4 to put the score at 3-1. Classmate Chris Reynolds quickly followed with a two-set win of his own at No. 3 to put the Colonials within one at 3-2.
Richmond clinched the match with a three-set win at No. 2 before freshman Dennis Afanasev finished the day with a victory at No. 5 in three sets to put the final score at 4-3.
