WASHINGTON - The George Washington men's tennis team defeated Revolutionary Rival George Mason on Friday afternoon, 5-2, at the GW Tennis Center on the Mount Vernon Campus.
The Colonials (14-5) triumphed in their outdoor home opener to claim a point in the year-long Revolutionary Rivalry, giving GW a 11-2 advantage for 2016-17 with five points still up for grabs.
The Buff and Blue took the doubles point to begin the day as the pair of junior Christos Hadjigeorgiou and freshman Jakub Behun dominated at No. 2 for a quick win. Mason took the No. 3 match, but senior Julius Tverijonas and junior Chris Fletcher outlasted the Patriots' top-flight duo and triumphed in a tiebreaker to solidify a 1-0 lead for GW.
Tverijonas increased the Colonials' lead with a straight-set win at No. 1 singles, and junior Chris Reynolds followed with a straight-set win of his own at No. 3 to put GW within one of clinching the team's match.
Mason then got on the board, taking the No. 6 bout before Hadjigeorgiou gave GW the win with his two-set triumph at No. 4.
Mason went on to take the No. 5 match before Fletcher completed a come-from-behind victory at No. 2 in three sets to put the final score at 5-2.
The Buff and Blue return to the GW Tennis Center on Saturday for a 1 p.m. match against Richmond. The Colonials will present championship rings to their 2016 A-10 Champion squad beforehand.
