ARLINGTON, Va. - Freshman Elliott Raimo struck out a career-high nine batters and allowed just two hits in a complete-game shutout as the George Washington baseball team evened its weekend series with a 5-0 win over Davidson on Saturday afternoon at Tucker Field.
Raimo was dominant in the win, facing two batters above the minimum of 27. He allowed just four base runners all afternoon on two hits, one walk and a hit batter. Five of his nine innings were 1-2-3 innings and he got the help of two double plays from the defense behind him in picking up his fifth victory of the season.
Raimo worked around a one-out double for a scoreless top half of the first before retiring the side in order in the second.
GW scored what amounted to the winning run in the bottom of the second inning on a sacrifice fly from senior Joey Bartosic before Raimo recorded two strikeouts as part of a 1-2-3 top half of the third.
The Colonials broke the game open with a trio of two-out runs in the bottom of the third inning. Freshman Nate Fassnacht and junior Robbie Metz started the sequence with back-to-back infield singles with two outs. Junior Mark Osis then blasted a two-run double off the wall in right field to put the Colonials ahead 3-0. The next batter was junior Brandon Chaman, who drove in Osis on a RBI single to extend the lead to 4-0.
GW scored its final run in the bottom of the fourth when Campbell hustled his way to a one-out double and then scored on a base knock by Fassnacht.
The five runs was enough for Raimo, who at one point retired 10 consecutive batters between the second and fifth innings. He allowed a two-out walk in the top of the fifth but got a strikeout to retire the side.
Raimo yielded only his second hit of the day with one out in the top of the eighth but immediately got an inning-ending double play to extinguish the threat.
Bartosic made a diving catch in centerfield for the final out of the game.
Bartosic was 2-for-3 on the day with one RBI and one walk while Fassnacht (2 H, 1 R, 1 RBI) and Metz (2 H, 2 R) joined him with multi-hit games. Osis finished 2-for-4 with one double and two RBIs.
GW aims to win the series in Sunday's rubber game. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
