ORLANDO, Fla. - The second-seeded GW men's tennis team blanked seventh-seeded Saint Joseph's in the Atlantic 10 Championship quarterfinal on Friday afternoon, 4-0, at the USTA National Campus.
GW will next face third-seeded VCU on Saturday at 2 p.m. for a spot in Sunday's final. The Colonials have faced and defeated VCU in the last three-consecutive A-10 title matches.
The Colonials took an early lead on Friday, taking the top two doubles matches to begin the day. The pair of senior Fernando Sala and junior Christos Hadjigeorgiou began with a swift triumph at No. 2 before senior Julius Tverijonas and junior Chris Fletcher gave GW a 1-0 lead with a victory at the top spot.
Tverijonas opened singles play in dominant fashion, taking a quick straight-set win at the No. 1 position. Junior Chris Reynolds followed with a two-setter of his own, downing his No. 3 foe to put GW ahead, 3-0.
Hadjigeorgiou clinched the victory with his straight-set win at No. 4 to give the Colonials a spot in Saturday's semifinal.
The Buff and Blue have now won eight of their last nine matches.
