ALERT: Due to Sunday's anticipated weather forecast, games two and three of this series will be played as a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 12 p.m.
ARLINGTON, Va. - Just three days after scoring a season-high 20 runs in a midweek win over Coppin State, the George Washington baseball team nearly duplicated the effort in a 15-5 win over Rhode Island in game one of a three-game set at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park.
The win gives GW (20-19) its fifth consecutive 20-win season and pulled its Atlantic 10 record to .500 at 5-5.
The Colonials put up four-run innings in both the second and third to build an 8-0 lead and then turned away a mid-game rally by Rhode Island to end the game with runs in each of the final three innings.
Junior Brady Renner picked up his team-leading sixth win of the season after allowing four runs on seven hits across 5.2 innings of work. Three of his runs came across on a home run after he exited the game. Senior Eddie Muhl allowed two walks and a hit across three scoreless innings to close out the game and earn his eighth save of the season.
GW started the scoring with four runs in the bottom of the second. With one out, junior Robbie Metz blasted a 1-1 pitch high off the wall in right field and came all the way around to score for an inside-the-park home run, the first of his career, to put GW ahead 1-0.
Later in the inning, a RBI single by senior Eli Kashi made the score 2-0. A balk added another run to the total and senior Andrew Selby made it 4-0 with a RBI groundout.
In the third inning, freshman Nate Fassnacht led off with a double and then scored on a throwing error. GW also got RBI doubles from both Kashi and senior Joey Bartosic in addition to another run scoring on a balk to hold an 8-0 lead after three innings.
GW made it a 10-0 lead with a pair of runs in the fifth. Senior Bobby Campbell drove in a run on a bases-loaded, infield single. Fassnacht then worked a bases-loaded, four-pitch walk.
Rhode Island showed signs of life in the top of the sixth. The Rams plated five runs on six hits, including a three-run home run after Renner's exit, but that is all the scoring they would accomplish.
Selby's squeeze bunt RBI in the bottom of the sixth made the score 11-5. Metz added a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning before three runs came across in the bottom of the eighth via a two-run double from Campbell and a RBI single by Fassnacht.
Kashi finished 4-for-5 on the day with three runs and two RBIs while Campbell was 2-for-6 with three RBIs. Fassnacht (3 H, 2 2B, 2 RBI), Selby (1 H, 2 RBI) and Metz (2 H, 1 2B, 2 RBI) also drove in multiple runs.
GW and Rhode Island will play game two on Saturday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
