ARLINGTON, Va. - The pitching trio of freshmen Emmett Harkins, Jaret Edwards and senior Eddie Muhl combined to limit visiting UMBC to just two runs as the George Washington baseball team rallied for a 3-2 win on Tuesday afternoon at Tucker Field.
The trio surrendered just five hits on the afternoon and did not walk a batter, the first time this season that GW (16-17) has not yielded a free pass.
Harkins started the game and pitched well, yielding only a two-run double in an otherwise solid 3.2 innings of work. He handed the ball over to classmate Edwards who earned the win with 4.1 innings of scoreless relief with only one hit.
Muhl worked a scoreless ninth for his fifth save of the season.
After Harkins stranded a two-out hit batter in the top of the first inning, the Colonials grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom half when senior Andrew Selby hit a one-out single, moved to second on a groundout and then scored on a RBI double by senior Bobby Campbell.
UMBC (9-14) got its only runs of the day on a two-run double in the third inning and maintained a one-run lead until the bottom of the fourth when the Colonials tied the score on a RBI single by junior Robbie Metz.
The score remained deadlocked until the bottom of the eighth where the Colonials plated the go-ahead run. Selby and senior Cody Bryant both got on base on consecutive one-out singles. Campbell then loaded the bases with a bloop infield single before junior Brandon Chapman legged out a fielder's choice RBI which put the Colonials on top, 3-2.
What initially looked like a double-play ball was broken up on a hard slide into second base by Campbell, which prevented a throw onto first base where Chapman hustled in safely, allowing Selby to score.
Muhl allowed a leadoff single in the top of the ninth but retired the side without issue.
Selby finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored on the day while Campbell (2-for-4, 1 RBI) and freshman Nate Fassnacht (2-for-3, 1 R, 1 BB) both added multi-hit games.
Additionally, GW's lineup combined to strikeout just one time.
The Colonials will spend a bye weekend from A-10 play on the road with a non-conference series at Villanova that gets underway Thursday.
