STERLING, Va. - The George Washington men's tennis team won its fourth-straight match on Sunday, defeating St. John's, 5-2, at Trump National Golf Club.
GW (9-4) overcame an early deficit to take the victory with strong singles play.
Senior Julius Tverijonas and junior Chris Fletcher paired to take the top doubles match, but St. John's snatched the early point with wins at Nos. 2-3.
Fletcher quickly evened the score with a triumph over a nationally ranked opponent for the second time this season by dominating No. 123 Roberto Livi in straight-sets at No. 2 to knot the score at 1-1.
Junior Christos Hadjigeorgiou put GW ahead for good with his two-set win at No. 4. Nationally ranked No. 118 Tverijonas then downed his top-flight opponent.
St. John's stayed alive with a win at No. 3, but freshman Dennis Afanasev clinched GW's victory, coming back from a set down at No. 5.
