ARLINGTON, Va. - The George Washington baseball team scored runs in each of its last six innings at the plate in an 8-2 win over NJIT in Friday's series opener at Tucker Field.
Junior Brady Renner earned the win with a quality start after yielding a pair of runs, both after he exited the game, on five hits with three strikeouts and a pair of walks.
The bullpen trio of Jaret Edwards, Kevin Hodgson and Eddie Muhl finished off the game with Muhl pitching the final two innings to clinch the win.
GW's aggression at the plate led to many high-stress innings for NJIT starter Sean Lubreski. The Colonials got runners on base every inning and took a 1-0 lead on a RBI single by Robbie Metz in the top of the third. Joey Bartosic picked up a two-out base hit, stole second and scored on the single.
The offensive momentum continued in the fourth as a leadoff double by Bobby Campbell and a walk by Nate Fassnacht put two on with no out. Later in the inning a RBI single by Brandon Chapman made it 2-0, moments ahead of a sacrifice fly by Matt Cosentino which made the score 3-0.
Renner sat down the Highlanders in order in both the fourth and fifth innings.
A sacrifice fly by Andrew Selby made the score 4-0 in the bottom of the fifth and Mark Osis' RBI single in the sixth pushed the advantage 5-0.
The Highlanders put two on with one out in the top of the seventh to chase Renner from the game, and eventually scored on a hit by pitch and base on balls with the bases loaded.
Southpaw Kevin Hodgson came out of the bullpen to get the final two outs of the inning and limit the damage before the Colonials scored insurance runs in their final two at bats.
In the seventh it was a RBI single by Chapman which made the score 6-2. In the eighth, Campbell picked up a RBI single and Selby doubled home a run to put the Colonials on top, 8-2.
Muhl sat down the Highlanders in order in the eighth and got a game-ending double play to clinch the game in the ninth.
Osis finished 3-for-4 at the plate with one RBI, one walk and one run while Metz (2-for-5, one RBI) and Chapman (2-for-3, two walks, two RBIs) picked up multiple-hit games.
Bartosic extended his hit streak to 12 straight games by going 1-for-4 with two runs and two stolen bases.
GW and NJIT play game two of the series on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
