Baseball Falls in Series Opener at FAMU

TALLAHASSEE - Junior Brady Renner and freshman Jaret Edwards combined to blank the opposition across seven shutout innings, but Florida A&M rallied with a trio of runs in the final two innings as the George Washington baseball team fell in the series opener, 3-2, on Friday night at Moore-Kittles Field.

Renner was solid once again in his second start of the season, allowing just four hits across five shutout innings of work.

GW's offense gave Renner a lead before he even took the mound with a run in the top of the first. Senior Joey Bartosic led off the game with a double down the left field line and then scored on a RBI single by junior Mark Osis.

Renner was perfect across the first two innings and allowed two hits across the third and fourth before running into trouble in the fifth. A leadoff single and a two-out hit put runners at the corners but the sophomore induced a groundball to end the threat.

GW scored again in the sixth inning when senior Andrew Selby was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. He stole second before scoring on a RBI double by junior Brandon Chapman to put the Colonials up 2-0

Freshman Jaret Edwards took the ball to open the sixth and allowed two walks and a hit to load the bases, but escaped the jam with an infield popup.

Edwards worked around a one-out error in the seventh inning before turning the ball over to senior Eddie Muhl in the eighth. Muhl allowed a single run in the eighth before giving up two runs on two hits in the ninth as the Rattlers rallied for the 3-2 win.

Freshman Nate Fassnacht continued his torrid start to his collegiate career with a pair of hits, the only Colonial to collect multiple hits.

GW and FAMU will play game two on Saturday at 1 p.m.
