WASHINGTON - First-year men's tennis head coach David Macpherson has added Jakub Behun to the roster for the spring 2017 semester.
A native of Bratislava, Slovakia, Behun joins the Colonials as a freshman after posting a career-high International Tennis Federation (ITF) junior ranking of 295. The rookie owns a strong career singles ITF record of 27-17, with a stellar 30-14 doubles mark.
Behun became the 18U Slovak National Champion in singles in 2015 and has reached one final and four semifinals on the ITF junior circuit. As a doubles competitor, Behun has one ITF juniors title on his resume after reaching four tournament finals and three additional semifinals.
Behun attended Gymnazium Kysucke Nove Mesto for his high school years and intends to study finance and international affairs at GW.
"Jakub is certainly an extremely high-character student-athlete," said Macpherson. "His results internationally suggest he has the ability to be part of our starting lineup immediately. We're very excited to have him come into the preseason to meet the team and work with the team and form new doubles partnerships."
Behun looks to help the Colonials to their fourth-consecutive Atlantic 10 Championship title in 2017. GW opens the spring slate on Jan. 21 with doubleheader action at Drake with Northern Illinois.
