Men's Tennis Triumphs in Season Opener

Des Moines, IA - The George Washington men's tennis team opened the 2017 season on Friday with a victory, shutting out Grand View, 7-0, on the Drake University campus at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center.
The Colonials (1-0) yielded just eight games on the day as NAIA member Grand View was unable to take a set from GW.
In doubles play, the duo of senior Julius Tverijonas and Chris Reynolds picked up a 6-2 win at the top spot. Senior Fernando Sala and junior Christos Hadjigeorgiou earned a 6-1 triumph in the No. 2 position while the pair of junior Chris Fletcher and freshman Jakub Behun blanked their third-flight opponents, 6-0.
The Colonials went on to take singles handily as Tverijonas claimed a 6-0, 6-1 victory at the No. 1 position. Reynolds followed with an identical score in second-flight play and Fletcher worked a 6-0, 6-1 win at the No. 3 spot. Rookie Dennis Afanasev posted a perfect, 6-0, 6-0, win at the No. 4 position as classmate William Tutecky claimed victory in the No. 5 spot, 6-0, 6-0. Hadjigeorgiou wrapped the Buff and Blue's day with an easy, 6-0, 6-0, defeat of his No. 6 opponent.
GW continues a busy opening weekend of play with a pair of matches on Saturday. The Colonials will first take on host Drake University at 10 a.m. ET before concluding doubleheader action against Northern Illinois.
