Update: The Colonials have added a match against Grand View, an NAIA member school, on Friday at 2 p.m. at Drake University.
WASHINGTON - The George Washington men's tennis team begins the 2017 season on Saturday with a pair of matches at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. The Colonials will first face the host Bulldogs at 10 a.m. before taking on Northern Illinois.
Under the direction of first-year head coach David Macpherson, the Colonials look to start the season off strong with six returners from last spring and three newcomers. GW finished with a 14-9 record a year ago, winning its third consecutive Atlantic 10 title and NCAA Team Championship berth.
Senior Julius Tverijonas is poised to lead the Colonials at the top of both the singles and doubles ladders and is one of three A-10 All-Conference selections returning from 2016. Juniors Chris Reynolds and Chris Fletcher also garnered postseason honors last season and will look to start off the dual match season strong.
Drake posted a 17-12 record in 2016 and advanced to the Missouri Valley Conference Championship match to finish the season with an ITA team ranking of No. 49. Vinny Gillespie begins the season for the Bulldogs as the ITA's No. 73-ranked singles player.
Northern Illinois tallied a 15-9 record a year ago, but a late season slump kept the Huskies out of contention for Mid-Atlantic Conference Tournament.
