ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Senior Julius Tverijonas and freshman William Tutecky claimed singles titles on Sunday afternoon as the George Washington men's tennis team closed a successful opening weekend of fall competition at the Navy-hosted Joe Hunt Invitational.
The Colonials took home two singles flight crowns and a doubles title to open fall tournament play. Tverijonas, playing as the A Flight's top seed, cruised to the final with straight-set victories over George Mason's Pally Ray and Monmouth's fourth-seeded Nicola Pipoli on Saturday. In Sunday's final, Tverijonas battled second-seeded Artem Kapshuk of Temple and came out on top, 6-4, 7-5, to claim the flight title.
Tutecky grabbed his first career flight title, defeating Navy's Krishna Jana and Monmouth's Christian Vieira in straight-sets on Saturday to earn a spot in Sunday's C Flight final. Tutecky faced classmate Dennis Afanasev - the flight's top seed - and went the distance to grab a 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 victory and the flight crown. Afanasev had advanced to the final after downing George Mason's Daniel Gutierrez in straight-sets before earning a three-set victory over Richmond's fourth-seeded Canyon Teague on Saturday.
Also in the A Flight, junior Chris Fletcher grabbed a quarterfinal win over St. Bonaventure's Victor Blanco in a dominating 6-0, 6-1 win. Fletcher then fell to Kapshuk in semifinal play on Saturday.
In B Flight singles action, senior Fernando Sala posted a stellar performance, advancing to Sunday's flight final after downing top-seeded Matt Lee of Navy and fourth-seeded James Aronson of Richmond on Saturday. Sala ultimately fell in Sunday's final to George Mason's Edward Ayers.
Junior Christos Hadjigeorgiou won a pair of consolation matches in the B Flight to wrap his weekend of solo play.
In doubles action, the top-seeded tandem of Tverijonas and Fletcher triumphed over fourth-seeded Pally Ray and Jakob Nielsen of George Mason, 6-2, in Saturday's semifinal before claiming the A Flight crown with a dominant 6-0 win over Navy's Greg Durham and Thomas Pecor.
In B Flight play, the top-seeded pair of Afanasev and Tutecky took a third-place finish after falling in the semifinal, but went on to defeat Delaware's Blaise Casselbury and Laurenz Lankes, 6-4, in the third place match.
The Colonials return to action at the 2016 Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma, beginning on Oct. 1.
