GW Men's Tennis Completes Successful Day 1 on Friday

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The George Washington men's tennis team wrapped a successful first day of competition at the Joe hunt Invitational hosted by Navy on Friday.
Six Colonials began the three-day tournament play on Friday: seniors Julius Tverijonas and Fernando Sala, juniors Christos Hadjigeorgiou and Chris Fletcher and freshmen William Tutecky and Dennis Afanasev.
In singles play, top-seeded Tverijonas advanced to the A Flight quarterfinal after defeating Delaware's Laurenz Lankes in straight-sets, 6-3, 6-2. Also in the A Flight, Fletcher - the No. 3 seed - took a straight-set win over Brandon Griffin of Mary Washington, 6-4, 6-3.
In the B Flight, Sala picked up a straight-set win of his own, 6-4, 6-2.
Playing as the top seed in the C flight, Afanasev posted a dominating 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Blaise Casselbury of Delaware. Third-seeded Tutecky rounded out GW's solo victories, notching a win over Bucknell's Bryan Adams, 6-4, 6-2.
Singles quarterfinals and semifinals will be played on Saturday with flight champions determined on Sunday.
Two of the Colonials' doubles pairs advanced to the semifinal round of their respective flights on Friday. The top-seeded duo of Tverijonas and Fletcher grabbed a dominant 6-1 victory over Delaware's Venkatesh Ramkumar and Luis Marcano to open A Flight play before downing Bucknell's Daniel Wright and Andrei Vitiuc, 6-3, to advance to the semifinals.
In B Flight action, the rookies Afanasev and Tutecky played as the top seed and triumphed over St. Bonaventure's Indra Patwardhan and Hector Martinez before blanking the George Mason pair of Alexis Pinsonneault and Edward Ayers, 6-0.
Afanasev and Tutecky and Tverijonas and Fletcher will compete in doubles semifinal play on Saturday.
Hadjigeorgiou and Sala split the day's doubles play, advancing to the A Flight quarterfinals with a win over Bucknell's Bryan Adams and Max Palmer before falling to Monmouth's second-seeded Nicola Pipoli and Przemyslaw Filipe.
Doubles semifinals and consolation play will take place on Saturday, with flight champions crowned on Sunday.
