TEMPE, Ariz. - The George Washington men's tennis squad has been named an Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Academic Team for the 2015-16 season. Additionally, rising senior Julius Tverijonas and recent graduate Danil Zelenkov achieved ITA Scholar-Athlete status.
The All-Academic Team award is presented to any ITA program that has a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or above. Individually, student-athletes must have a GPA of at least 3.50 for the academic year to qualify for the Scholar-Athlete award.
"I am really proud of the academic success we continue to have," said interim head coach Torrie Browning. "We stress the importance of academics and it is just great to see our student-athletes being honored for all of their hard work."
The Colonials posted a team GPA of 3.23 during the 2015-16 season while winning the Atlantic 10 Championship crown for the third consecutive year and the fifth time in the last six seasons while posting a 14-9 record.
Tverijonas earns his second career ITA Scholar-Athlete distinction after posting a strong 2015-16 season in the classroom - earning a 3.80 GPA - that landed him Atlantic 10 All-Academic honors for the second consecutive year. The Siauliai, Lithuania, native also had a stellar season on the court, grabbing A-10 All-Conference First Team distinction after amassing an overall 18-12 singles record and a 10-9 mark at the top solo spot this spring to close the season with an ITA Atlantic Region rank of No. 18.
Zelenkov achieves ITA Scholar-Athlete status for the fourth time in his career. The 2016 graduate also garnered A-10 All-Academic honors this season - for the third time in his career - and twice received an Outstanding Academic Achievement Award from the Elliot School of International affairs during his time as a Colonial. Zelenkov tallied a perfect 4.0 GPA during his senior year. A two-time CoSIDA Academic All-District selection, Zelenkov landed All-Conference First Team in each year of his career and posted an overall 19-9 singles mark with a 13-6 dual match mark as a senior.
Tverjonas and Zelenkov teamed up as GW's top doubles pair, grabbing a year-end regional ranking of No. 7 after tallying an overall 21-3 mark - including a perfect 10-0 record in spring regular-season action.
