SKILLMAN, N.J. - The George Washington men's tennis squad is slotted No. 7 in the Atlantic Region in the final ITA regional rankings of the spring. Rising senior Julius Tverijonas finished a strong season as the region's No. 18 solo player and paired with recent graduate Danil Zelenkov to take the No. 7 doubles slot.
The Colonials won their third consecutive Atlantic 10 title in 2016 - their fifth crown in the last six seasons - to advance to the NCAA Team Tournament for the third straight year and fifth time in program history. Interim head coach Torrie Browning led GW to an overall 14-9 dual match record en route to A-10 Coach of the Year honors.
An A-10 All-Conference First Team and All-Academic Team selection in 2016, Tverijonas posted an overall 18-12 solo mark this season with a 10-9 record in dual match play. The product of Siauliai, Lithuania, played exclusively at the top singles position this spring. His No. 18 solo regional ranking marks a two-spot jump from his preseason rank of No. 20.
As a duo, Tverijonas and Zelenkov paired as GW's top tandem, posting an overall 21-3 mark this year, including a perfect 10-0 record in the spring in regular-season action. Zelenkov grabbed both All-Conference First Team and All-Academic Team honors from the A-10 while being named a CoSIDA Academic All-District selection for the second time in his career.
