COLLEGE STATION, TX - The George Washington men's tennis squad wrapped its 2016 season on Friday in the first round of the NCAA Team Championship. Facing 12th-seeded host Texas A&M, the Colonials fell, 4-0, at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.
The Colonials (14-9) battled in doubles action, but No. 12 Texas A&M (27-9) claimed the early point with wins at the Nos. 2-3 positions. Junior Julius Tverijonas and senior Danil Zelenkov trailed the Aggies' No. 89-ranked pair of Aleksandre Bakshi and Jackson Withrow just 6-5 when play was suspended.
In the singles portion, the Buff and Blue fell at the bottom three flights in straight sets to clinch the match for Texas A&M, 4-0.
"Texas A&M is obviously the 12-seed for a reason, said Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year Torrie Browning. "They are a very good team and poised to go far. I was really proud of the way our guys came out in doubles, making the sets close. But, we really couldn't execute on a couple of key points. It hasn't been the easiest season but I'm still really proud of the way our team fought and the way we finished up."
Atlantic 10 First Team All-Conference selection Chris Reynolds had won his first set at No. 3 and was knotted at 3-3 in his second set when his match was abandoned. Fellow First Team members Tverijonas and Zelenkov were locked in battles with the nation's Nos. 18 and 52-ranked singles players, respectively. Both had dropped close first sets and were vying for second set victories.
The Colonials wrap another successful season, claiming its third consecutive A-10 crown and fifth in the last six seasons while leading the conference with eight postseason honors.
For the third-straight year, GW ends its season in the NCAA Team Championship.
"It means a lot to represent your school, and playing in a national championship team format is always a privilege," said Browning. "I know our guys really worked hard this year. We did a really good job of just getting here. Really proud of the way we made it through everything and handled adversity."
