DAYTON, Ohio - The George Washington baseball team rallied to tie the score in the top of the eighth inning but Dayton rebounded to score the game-winning run in the bottom half to take a 2-1 decision on Saturday afternoon at Woerner Field.
Junior Shane Sweeney was the hard-luck loser after allowing two runs on four hits with no walks and three strikeouts in seven innings.
Neither team had a baserunner in through the first two innings before Dayton (14-26, 5-9 A-10) took a 1-0 lead after a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third.
A pitchers' duel ensued as neither team advanced a baserunner past first base until the seventh inning when the Colonials tied the game on a RBI single by junior Joey Bartosic. The Colonials threatened for more but stranded two on base to end the inning.
The Flyers scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth after a leadoff single, followed by a pair of consecutive two-out hits. GW went down in order in the top of the ninth to end the game.
The Colonials and Flyers will play the rubber match on Sunday afternoon at 12:00 p.m.
