GREENVILLE, N.C. - The George Washington men's tennis squad outlasted East Carolina on Friday, claiming a 4-3 victory at the Pirates' River Birch Tennis Complex.
The Colonials (9-7) took an early 1-0 lead after the pair of junior Julius Tverijonas and senior Danil Zelenkov won their top-flight doubles match, 6-4. Sophomore Chris Reynolds and senior Cahit Kapukiran then clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 triumph at No. 3.
East Carolina (8-10) evened the score in singles play, taking a 6-3, 6-1 victory at the No. 3 spot.
Tverijonas regained the edge for GW, dominating in a 6-1, 6-1 win at the top solo spot. Zelenkov followed with his ninth consecutive victory, a straight-set 6-4, 6-1 effort in second-flight play.
The Pirates then won three-set battles at the Nos. 4 and 6 matches to tie the score, 3-3.
The match came down to Kapukiran at the No. 5 slot. The senior fought hard to earn a come-from-behind 3-6, 7-6 (7-0), 6-3 triumph and grab the victory for the Colonials, 4-3.
