COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The George Washington baseball team scored a season-high 19 runs on a season-high 20 hits in a dominating 19-10 rout over Maryland on Wednesday night at Bob "Turtle" Smith Field.
GW (4-8) posted the most runs of the Gregg Ritchie era on Wednesday night. The total also stands as the most runs in a single game since the Colonials won 21-5 over Saint Louis on April 26, 2008.
Six players in the starting lineup recorded multiple-hit games, led by four-hit efforts from junior Kevin Mahala and sophomore Matt Cosentino.
Mahala drove in a career-high six runs, the most RBIs in a single game since Tom Zebroski recorded six RBIs on April 23, 2010. The shortstop went 4-for-6 at the plate with three doubles and one run.
Cosentino finished with a career-high five RBIs after going 4-for-7 with one double and thee runs.
Maryland (5-7) took a brief 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning off of GW starter Shane Sweeney, before the Colonials responded with five runs in the top of the second for the first of what would be five innings with multiple runs crossing the plate.
Junior Andrew Selby led off the second with a walk and moved to third on a single by junior Bobby Campbell. Sophomore Robbie Metz followed with a RBI single for the first run of the inning. Later in the inning, junior Eli Kashi walked to load the bases ahead of junior Joey Bartosic, who gave the Colonials a one-run lead with a two-run double to right field. Later in the inning, Cosentino struck for a two-run single to extend the lead to 5-2 after 1.5 innings.
The Terrapins mounted a two-out rally in the bottom half of the second, using a three-run home run and a RBI triple, to regain the lead at 6-5.
After a scoreless third inning, the Colonials' offense got back to work with four runs in the top half of the fourth. Kashi led off by being hit by a pitch and moved to third on a single by Bartosic. Cosentino then followed with a RBI single to tie the score at 6-6. After a groundout advanced the base runners to second and third, Mahala followed with a two-run single to left field to put GW ahead, 8-6. An error extended the inning and added to the lead, putting the Colonials on top, 9-6.
Maryland pulled back within one run of the lead after back-to-back solo home runs in the bottom half of the fourth, but GW began to pull ahead with six runs across the next two innings.
The Colonials posted two runs in the top of the fifth via a RBI single by Osis and a RBI double by Mahala.
In the sixth, four runs came across as GW broke the game open. Cosentino connected on a two-run single, followed by a two-out error that extended the inning. Mahala made the Terps pay, doubling in two runs to blow the game open and put the Colonials ahead, 15-8.
The Terps scored single runs in the sixth and seventh but it was all they could muster down the stretch. GW put an exclamation on a dominant win with three runs in the eighth and one in the ninth.
In the eighth, sophomore Brendan Chapman led off with a double, followed by a walk to Kashi. A sacrifice bunt moved the runners up a base and Osis brought them home with a bases-clearing tirple. Mahala doubled in Osis to make the score 18-8.
The final run of the game scored in the ninth off of a RBI single by Kashi.
In addition to Mahala and Cosentino, GW got multiple-RBI efforts from Bartosic (3-for-6, three runs, one double, two RBIs) and Osis (3-for-5, one triple, two runs, five RBIs).
Metz (2-for-5, two runs, one walk, one RBI) and Chapman (2-for-5, three runs, one double) contributed multiple-hit games, while Kashi (1-for-2, two walks) found himself on base multiple times.
Junior Jordan Sheinkop earned the win in relief after limiting the Terps to two earned runs on three hits in 2.1 innings of work. Junior Eddie Muhl earned his fourth save of the season with three shutout innings down the stretch with four strikeouts.
GW returns home to open a three-game series with Monmouth this weekend at Tucker Field. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
