WASHINGTON - The George Washington baseball team followed Wednesday's 19-run outburst with 14 runs on 19 hits in a 14-5 win over Monmouth in the series opener on Friday afternoon at Tucker Field.
GW (5-8) has now scored a combined 33 on 39 hits across the past two games. Six players recorded multiple hits on Friday with five players knocking in multiple runs.
Senior Bobby LeWarne earned the win after allowing five runs on six hits across 5.2 innings of work. He worked around a two-out walk to retire the side in the top half of the first inning.
Junior Joey Bartosic led off the home first with a single up the middle and later scored on a RBI single by sophomore Mark Osis to put the Colonials ahead after one, 1-0.
LeWarne issued a one-out walk in the top of the second, but a great hustle play by sophomore second baseman Robbie Metz ended the threat. Metz darted to his left on a ball that was almost to the foul line, fielded cleanly and threw on the run to get the runner at first base.
Monmouth got the first two batters of the third inning on base but LeWarne erased the threat thanks to a pair of fly outs and an inning-ending strikeout.
Kashi led off the bottom half of the inning with a base hit and moved to third on a perfectly executed hit-and-run play with Bartosic at the plate. Sophomore Matt Cosentino followed with a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 2-0.
Osis followed with a base hit to right field and advanced to second on a late throw as Bartosic slid safely into third base. Junior Kevin Mahala then cleared the bases with a RBI double to the gap in left center field to push the lead to 4-0. Metz concluded the inning by extending the lead to 5-0 with a two-out RBI single.
Monmouth got on the board in the fourth after a three-run home run from Jordan McCrum cut the deficit 5-3, but the Colonials responded with seven runs, all with two outs, in the bottom half of the frame.
Bartosic started the outburst with a two-out double. He advanced to third on an infield single by Cosentino and scored on a throwing error by the Monmouth shortstop. The next batter was Osis, who singled through the left side to push the lead to 7-3.
After Mahala was hit by a pitch, sophomore Campbell roped a two-run double down the left field line. Metz followed with a RBI single through the left side to push the lead to 10-3. Junior Andrew Selby the blooped a double to center field for an 11-3 lead.
The hits kept coming as Chapman came up and laced a RBI single to the gap in right center for a 12-3 lead.
Bartosic led off the fifth with a double down the left field line and then scored on a fielding error to push the lead to 13-3. Campbell followed with a RBI single up the middle to give the Colonials a 14-3 advantage.
Monmouth scored two runs in the top half of the sixth to cut the deficit to nine runs.
Senior Luke Olson worked 1.1 scoreless innings of relief after LeWarne's exit. He was followed out of the bullpen by senior Randy Dalrymple who closed the game out with two innings of shutout ball.
Bartosic finished 4-for-5 at the plate with four runs and two doubles.
Mahala went 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs and three RBIs. Cosentino (2-for-4, two runs, two RBIs), Metz (3-for-5, two RBIs) and Campbell (1-for-5, two RBIs) also knocked in multiple runs for the Colonials.
GW and Monmouth will play game two on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. at Tucker Field.
