WASHINGTON - Junior Shane Sweeney provided seven innings of shutout relief, but the George Washington baseball team was unable to overcome an early deficit in a 4-1 loss to Monmouth on Saturday afternoon at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park.
Sweeney allowed just one hit and one walk with five strikeouts across seven sparkling innings. He relieved GW starter Robbie Metz, who took the loss after allowing four runs on six hits in two innings.
Monmouth (4-8) plated three runs on four hits in the top of the first after opening the game with four consecutive singles. A double play got the first two outs of the inning ahead of an inning-ending flyout that limited the damage.
The Hawks added a fourth run in the top of the second on an RBI single by Shaine Hughes.
The Colonials (5-9) plated their only run in the bottom of the third inning. Junior Eli Kashi was hit by a pitch with one out, moved to second on an infield single by junior Joey Bartosic and scored on an RBI base hit by sophomore Matt Cosentino.
GW threatened multiple times in the later innings but was never able to get runs across against Monmouth's pitchers, stranding a total of 12 runners on base.
Anthony Ciavarella earned the win after allowing one run on seven hits with four strikeouts across seven innings of work. Joe Moltierrie worked three scoreless innings for the save.
Bartosic and Cosentino each recorded two hits to pace the GW offense.
GW and Monmouth will play the rubber game on Sunday afternoon at 12 p.m. Senior Jacob Williams (1-0, 3.15 ERA) will get the start for the Colonials.
