GW Men's Tennis Grabs Road Win at UMBC

BALTIMORE - The George Washington men's tennis team grabbed its second road victory in as many days on Sunday evening with a 4-2 triumph over Atlantic Region foe UMBC.
The win marked GW's second of the weekend after downing Atlantic 10 rival Richmond on Saturday.
The Retrievers (4-9) jumped out to an early lead with doubles victories at the top two spots before the pair of senior Cahit Kapukiran and sophomore Chris Reynolds took a third-flight 6-1 win.
Junior Julius Tverijonas evened the score with his straight-set 6-0, 7-5 triumph at the No. 1 solo position. Sophomore Chris Fletcher then gave the Colonials the lead with a 6-4, 6-4 victory in second-flight action before Reynolds put the Buff and Blue within one point of clinching the match with his three-set 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 battle at No. 4.
UMBC cut its deficit to 3-2 after going the distance to take the No. 3 bout, but junior Fernando Sala secured GW's victory, outlasting his fifth-flight foe, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3.
With the win, the Colonials (5-5) improve to 3-0 against Atlantic Region opponents this spring. After recently breaking into GW's singles lineup, Sala owns a 3-0 dual match mark and has won four straight solo contests dating back to the fall season.
The Buff and Blue conclude a stretch of nine consecutive road matches with a three-match California swing over spring break beginning on March 16 at San Francisco.
