GW Men's Tennis Dominates George Mason on Saturday

FAIRFAX, Va. - The George Washington men's tennis team defeated Revolutionary Rival George Mason in dominating fashion, 6-1, on Saturday afternoon at the George Mason Tennis Courts.
The Colonials (8-7) jumped out to an early lead, taking the doubles point as junior Julius Tverijonas and senior Danil Zelenkov blanked Mason (6-9) at the top spot, 6-0, for their sixth consecutive win as a pair. The Patriots then grabbed the second-flight match before sophomore Chris Reynolds and senior Cahit Kapukiran took a 7-5 win at No. 3 to clinch the early point.
In singles play, Mason evened the score with a win at the No. 4 position, but would not score again as the Colonials went on to dominate solo action.
Zelenkov took a straight-set, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3), triumph at the No. 2 spot to regain the edge for the Colonials. Tverijonas then followed with a 6-4, 6-2 victory at the top of the ladder to put GW within one of clinching. Zelenkov's win marked his eighth in a row.
GW solidified the victory as junior Fernando Sala earned a 7-5, 6-3 win a the No. 6 position. Kapukiran then followed with a 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 victory No. 5, before Reynolds took his seventh consecutive triumph with a win, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, at No. 3.
With the victory, GW takes a 10-2 lead over Mason in the year-long Revolutionary Rivalry and improves to 2-0 against Atlantic 10 foes.
The Colonials return to the court on Friday, when the squad visits East Carolina for the first of three weekend road matches.
