GW Men's Tennis Defeats Georgetown on Friday

WASHINGTON - The George Washington men's tennis squad downed crosstown rival Georgetown, 5-2, in an Atlantic Region matchup on Friday afternoon at the GW Tennis Center on the Mount Vernon Campus.
The Colonials (7-7) swiftly grabbed the doubles point to begin their outdoor home opener. The top-flight duo of junior Julius Tverijonas and senior Danil Zelenkov took a 6-2 win, and sophomore Chris Reynolds and senior Cahit Kapukiran followed with a 6-2 win of their own at No. 3 to clinch the point.
In singles competition, Tverijonas extended GW's lead to 2-0 with a top flight triumph, 6-4, 6-2, as sophomore Christos Hadjigeorgiou claimed a 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 4 to put the Buff and Blue within one point of clinching the match.
Zelenkov issued the deciding blow, notching a 6-3, 6-4 triumph to solidify the victory for GW and extend the lead to 4-0.
Georgetown (5-7) went on to win the Nos. 3 and 6 bouts to prevent the shutout. Reynolds grabbed a hard-fought, 6-5, 5-7, 10-7, victory at No. 4 to extend his singles win streak to six consecutive matches.
The Colonials visit Revolutionary Rival George Mason on Saturday at 2 p.m. to wrap competition for the week.
