HOUSTON - Junior Andrew Selby extended his reached-base streak to 21 consecutive games but the George Washington baseball team fell in the series opener at Houston, 5-0, on Friday night at Schroeder Park.
GW (8-14) put the ball in play, striking out just once in the game, but was unable to break through against the strong pitching by Houston (14-7). Mitch Ullom earned the win for the Cougars with eight shutout innings, scattering four hits and hitting a batter.
The Colonials' best chance came when they put two runners on in the top of the second after a single by Selby and a hit batsman, but the Cougars escaped the bind unscathed.
Houston took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning before extending the lead to 4-0 on a three-run home run by Clay Casey in the third, and added a fifth run on a RBI single in the bottom of the seventh en route to the win.
Senior Bobby LeWarne took the loss for the Colonials after allowing three earned runs on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Junior Jordan Sheinkop allowed one run on a pair of hits before turning the ball over to senior Randy Dalrymple, who blanked the opposition across the final 1.2 innings.
GW and Houston will continue the three-game set on Saturday evening at 7:30 p.m. ET.
