GW Men's Tennis Drops California Opener

SAN FRANCISCO - The George Washington men's tennis team dropped a 4-2 decision at San Francisco in its first of three matches in four days during a spring break road trip to California.
In doubles play, the duo of sophomore Chris Reynolds and senior Cahit Kapukiran claimed victory at No. 3, 6-2, but the Dons evened the score with a 6-1 win at the top flight. Junior Fernando Sala and sophomore Christos Hadjigeorgiou fought hard, but ultimately fell, 7-5, at the No. 2 spot to put San Francisco up, 1-0, after the doubles portion.
The Dons took a 2-0 lead with a second-flight singles win, but senior Danil Zelenkov took a three-set 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 triumph at the No. 3 spot to put the Colonials within one.
Junior Julius Tverijonas battled at the top solo spot, taking the first set, 7-5, but fell in the next two as the Dons took a 3-1 lead. Reynolds continued his hot play with a victory in fifth-flight action, 6-3, 6-4, to win his third consecutive solo bout.
San Francisco clinched the match at No. 6, edging Hadjigeorgiou, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2.
The Colonials continue California play on Friday, as the Buff and Blue travel to Pacific to take on Nevada at 1 p.m. before facing the host Tigers on Saturday.
