WASHINGTON - The George Washington men's tennis squad will play three matches in four days during a spring break California road trip beginning on Wednesday to conclude a stretch of nine connective away contests.
The Colonials (5-5) start their West Coast swing at San Francisco on Wednesday. GW will then head to Stockton, California, to take on Nevada on Friday before facing host No. 66 Pacific on Saturday.
The Buff and Blue return to the court after 10 days off from competition. The Colonials have won their last two matches, taking Atlantic Region road wins over Atlantic 10 foe Richmond (March 5) and UMBC (March 6).
Junior Fernando Sala has won all three of his singles matches this spring playing at the Nos. 5 and 6 positions, taking a straight-set victory against Eastern Washington on Feb. 27 and grabbing three-set triumphs versus Richmond and UMBC. Junior Julius Tverijonas leads the Colonials in 2016 with a 5-4 dual match mark at the top spot after winning his last two matches.
Senior Cahit Kapukiran and sophomore Chris Reynolds have paired up to win their last three doubles bouts at the No. 3 slot.
San Francisco (2-12) enters the weekend after posting a 1-2 mark at the Mountain-Pacific Invitational hosted by New Mexico State. Woravin Kumthonkittikul leads the squad with a 6-5 solo dual match record, competing primarily at the No. 6 position this spring.
Nevada (3-7) has fallen in five of their last six matches, most recently being shut out by UT Arlington and UC Davis at the Golden State Invitational last weekend.
No. 66 Pacific (8-7) will face the Colonials after edging Grand Canyon, 4-3, on Saturday. The Tigers have played a highly competitive schedule so far this spring, taking on seven ranked opponents and claiming victories over then-No. 41 New Mexico on Jan. 18 and then-No. 27 UC Santa Barbara on Feb. 27.
Pacific's Sam Verbeek broke into the national singles rankings last week at No. 119 and owns a team-best 10-2 mark in the top spot this spring, including an upset of UC Davis' No. 38 Alec Adamson in straight sets.
Wednesday's match is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET at San Francisco, while both Friday and Saturday's matches are slated for 1 p.m. ET at Pacific's Eve Zimmerman Tennis Center.
