WASHINGTON - First-year head coach David Macpherson has announced the GW men's tennis spring 2017 schedule.
The defending Atlantic 10 champion Colonials will take on three squads that closed the 2015-16 with an ITA team ranking in a challenging spring slate.
GW begins the spring with seven consecutive road contests beginning at Northern Illinois on Jan. 21 for doubleheader action with the host Huskies and Drake. The latter finished last season with a No. 49 ITA team ranking.
The Buff and Blue will then head to Austin Peay on Jan. 27 and Middle Tennessee State University for a Jan. 28 match before traveling to the Dave Marshall Tennis Center at Plantations Resort in Delaware for a neutral site contest against Atlantic Region foe Morgan State on Feb. 5.
The Colonials wrap a block of season-opening road matches on Feb. 11 with a visit to Florida State. The Seminoles finished as the nation's No. 26-ranked squad last season after making an appearance in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
GW opens home play on Feb. 12 when Monmouth visits the Southeast Tennis and Learning Center - home to the Colonials' indoor bouts. Monmouth made its NCAA Tournament debut in 2016 after claiming the MAAC Conference Championship crown.
The Buff and Blue then return to the road for 11-straight matches, beginning with a trip to regional opponent William & Mary on Feb. 17. The Colonials will remain at William & Mary to take on DePaul on Feb. 18.
GW opens March at the Tennis Center at Trump National Golf Club in Sterling, Virginia, for two days of competition beginning on March 4 against regional rival Navy. The Colonials then take on 2016 NCAA Tournament qualifier St. John's on March 5.
The Colonials head south during spring break for a trio of contests, beginning with a matchup at Florida Atlantic on March 14. GW will then face UConn on March 15 at Florida Atlantic before traveling to Florida Gulf Coast for a March 16 match.
GW will then visit Southern Mississippi and South Alabama on March 25 and 26, respectively, to close a busy month of competition.
The 11-match road stretch comes to a close when the Colonials take on A-10 foe VCU on April 1 at UNC-Wilmington. GW will face the host Seahawks the following day. UNCW closed last season with a No. 73 ITA ranking.
The Buff and Blue will open home outdoor play at the GW Tennis Center on the Mount Vernon Campus when A-10 rival George Mason visits for a Revolutionary Rivalry bout on April 7. The Colonials will then host Richmond on April 8.
GW makes a short trip to local foe Georgetown on April 20 before wrapping the season at home against Fordham for Senior Day at the GW Tennis Center.
The Colonials will compete for their fourth-consecutive conference title at the 2017 Atlantic 10 Championship from April 27-30 at the new USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida, which is set to open in January. The facility will feature 100 tennis courts, including two 500-seat championship courts as well as a 50,000 square-foot Welcome Center. GW has won five of the last six conference tournaments.
