TULSA, Okla. - The George Washington men's tennis team began play at the 2016 Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American Championships on Saturday at the University of Tulsa's Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
In the pre-qualifying Round of 256, juniors Christos Hadjigeorgiou and Chris Fletcher each tallied straight-set victories. Hadjigeorgiou downed Dayton's Simon Jayaram, 6-2, 6-0, and Fletcher took a dominating, 6-1, 6-1, triumph over South Dakota State's Chuck Tang.
In second round play, Fletcher fell to Fabian Fallert of Ole Miss and Hadjigeorgiou lost to Denver's Alex Gasson.
Rookie Dennis Afanasev battled in a three-set effort but ultimately fell, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, in his first match. He will continue play in consolation action.
Qualifying singles and doubles play will begin on Monday.
Senior Julius Tverijonas will begin singles play on Monday in qualifying action. Tverijonas and Fletcher will pair for doubles and Afanasev and Hadjigeorgiou will team up as a tandem.
