GW Men's Tennis Begins ITA Regional Play

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The George Washington men's tennis squad wrapped the first day of the ITA Atlantic Region Championships on Friday afternoon at Virginia Tech's Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
Seniors Julius Tverijonas and Fernando Sala, juniors Christos Hadjigeorgiou and Chris Fletcher and freshman Dennis Afanasev competed for the Colonials on Friday.
GW posted a perfect, 2-0, day in doubles play, while Afanasev advanced in solo action.
In the singles main draw Afanasev took a straight-set, 6-1, 7-5, win over Richmond's Klein Evans to advance to the Round of 64. Tverijonas, playing as the tournament's 11th-seeded singles player, received a first round bye.
Hadjigeorgiou, Fletcher and Sala each dropped their first round matches in singles action.
The fifth-seeded tandem of Tverijonas and Fletcher posted a swift, 8-2 victory over Duquesne's Drew Akins and Chris Carrao in first round play. The Colonials will face Liberty's Diego Castano and Alex Poynter in the Round of 32.
The pair of Hadjigeorgiou and Sala advanced to the Round of 32 with an 8-6 victory over James Madison's Paul Mendoza and Tate Steinour. The duo will next take on Amadeo Blasco and Arthur Bardallotto of Longwood.
ITA Regional play will continue on Saturday with two rounds of doubles play in one round of singles.
