SKILLMAN, N.J. - George Washington men's tennis senior Danil Zelenkov and junior Julius Tverijonas have earned singles and doubles Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Atlantic Region rankings to begin the 2016 season.
Zelenkov starts the spring season with a No. 19 regional ranking, while Tverijonas will play as No. 20. The duo holds the No. 7 spot in the Atlantic Region doubles rankings.
"Danil and Julius had a ranked doubles win this year and put together solid singles play as well," said head coach Greg Munoz.
Zelenkov posted a strong fall singles record of 6-3, reaching a flight final at the Joe Hunt Invitational and advancing to the Round of 16 at the 2015 USTA/ITA Atlantic Regional Championship. Last spring, the Skopje, Macedonia, native split time between No. 1 and No. 2 singles, posting an overall 17-16 solo mark and a team-best 5-1 record in Atlantic 10 Conference play en route to an A-10 All-Conference First Team selection.
Tverijonas led the Colonals with an 8-3 singles record during the fall tournament season. Recovering from an early season illness, Tverijonas wrapped his 2015 spring slate with a 9-7 singles record, playing primarily at the No. 5 spot for the Colonials and earning A-10 All-Conference Second Team honors.
During the fall, Tverijonas and Zelenkov teamed up for a squad-best 9-2 record, highlighted by a victory over the No. 46 pair of Carlos Benito and Cole Fiegel of Georgia Tech at the ITA All-American Championships. The duo won their doubles flight at the Joe Hunt Memorial Invitational in September before advancing to the semifinals of the USTA/ITA Atlantic Regional Championships the next month. Tverijonas and Zelenkov competed in second-flight doubles action last spring, putting together an impressive 7-1 mark, including a team-best 4-0 record against A-10 opponents.
"We are a team who will fly under the radar this year," said Coach Munoz. "We have great team chemistry with guys that really want to win.
"There are quite a few teams in the rankings that we have beaten in the last year, and we feel we can break through as a team and as individuals. We have graduated two ranked players in the last two years, but I wouldn't be surprised if we send a player or a doubles team to the NCAA Tournament this year. The guys are healthy and playing great tennis - it will be an exciting spring."
