GW Men's Tennis Wraps Day 1 of Fall Season

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Senior Danil Zelenkov and junior Julius Tverijonas reached singles flight semifinals as the GW men's tennis team completed the first day of play at Navy's Joe Hunt Invitational on Friday.
Zelenkov, seeded second in the A Flight, defeated Army's Michael Nguyen in straight sets before advancing passed Georgetown's Daniel Khanin to reach the flight semifinals, where Zelenkov will take on Navy's Austin Jones on Saturday. Also in Flight A, Tverijonas - the No. 3 seed - triumphed over Temple's Nicolas Paulas and advanced to the flight semis with a victory over Navy's Thomas Pecor. Tverijonas will play the flight's top seed, UMBC's Jaan Kononov, on Saturday in the semifinals.
In B Flight singles play, junior Fernando Sala fell to David Lundig Johannson of Mary Washington in the Round of 16, but bounced back to defeat Temple's Hicham Belkssir in the consolation bracket. Sala will take on George Mason's Joe Hill in the consolation semifinals on Saturday.
Sophomore Jabari Stafford rounded out singles action for the Colonials in the D Flight, triumphing over St. Bonaventure's Timothy DeSanto as the flight's No. 2 seed. Stafford then dropped a three-set battle to George Mason's Guilano Buzoiano and will play in the fifth-place bracket against Georgetown's Jordi Portner on Saturday.
In doubles action, the duo of Zelenkov and Tverijonas triumphed over St. Bonaventure's Eduardo Irizzary and Victor Blanco, 6-3, in A Flight play and will face Navy's Aries Wong and Andrey Magic in the flight quarterfinals on Saturday. The pair of Stafford and Sala advanced to the B Flight quarterfinals with a decisive, 6-2, win over George Mason's Aaron Capitel and Conor Moran. Stafford and Sala will play Temple's Stephen Ong and Filip Stipic on Saturday in the quarterfinals.
One round of singles and two rounds of doubles play are slated to take place on Saturday.
