GW Men's Tennis Opens Fall Season at Navy

WASHINGTON - The George Washington men's tennis squad opens its fall season over the weekend at the three-day Joe Hunt Invitational hosted by Navy.
The Colonials enter the fall slate after a strong spring season, winning their fourth Atlantic 10 title in five years. Seven returnees and one newcomer make up the fall 2015 squad.
GW is one of 12 participating schools in the three-day tournament consisting of five singles flights and three doubles flights. Each singles player is guaranteed four matches while doubles pairs will play a minimum of three contests.
Senior Danil Zelenkov, juniors Julius Tverijonas and Fernando Sala and sophomore Jabari Stafford will compete at the Joe Hunt Invitational. Sala enters his first fall as a Colonial after transferring from Clemson.
Play will begin on Friday with two singles rounds and one doubles round and will continue on Saturday with one round of singles play and a pair of doubles rounds. Flight champions will be crowned on Sunday with the final round of both singles and doubles.
Zelenkov and Tverijonas will compete in the singles A Flight as the Nos. 2 and 3 seeds, respectively. Tverijonas will take on Temple's Nicolas Paulas, while Zelenkov will play Army's Michael Nguyen in the Round of 16.
Sala will face Mary Washington's David Lunding Johannson in the B Flight, and Stafford will play as the D Flight's No. 2 seed and challenge St. Bonaventure's Timothy DeSanto in Round of 16 matches.
Quarterfinal bouts will also be played on Friday, followed by semifinals on Saturday and finals on Sunday crowning both flight and consolation winners.
In doubles action, Tverijonas and Zelenkov will team up to take on St. Bonaventure's Eduardo Irizzary and Victor Blanco to open play in the A Flight, and Stafford and Sala will partner to face George Mason's Aaron Capitel and Conor Moran in the B Flight Round of 16. Quarterfinals and semifinals will be played on Saturday, and Sunday will determine both flight and consolation champions.
