WASHINGTON - For the second straight day, the George Washington men's tennis team claimed a 4-3 victory at the GW Tennis Center as the Colonials edged St. John's on Sunday. The win came a day after the Buff and Blue upset No. 61 UNC-Wilmington on Saturday.
GW (8-12, 0-1 A-10) claimed the early doubles point with wins at the top two positions. At No. 1, senior Francisco Dias and partner Chris Fletcher defeated the nation's 66th ranked duo of Lucas Hejhal and Vaidik Munshaw, 8-5, to clinch the 1-0 lead.
In singles competition, the Colonials increased their lead to 3-0 with straight-set victories by freshman Christos Hadjigeorgiou and junior Cahit Kapukiran at Nos. 4 and 6, respectively.
The Red Storm notched its first point of the day with a three-set win at the top spot and came within one after another three-set triumph at second-flight action. Another win for St. John's, at the No. 3 position, knotted the score at three.
The deciding point came down to GW sophomore Julius Tverijonas and St. John's Elio Livi in the fifth spot. Tverijonas claimed the first set, but narrowly fell in the second, 7-5, to extend the match to a third frame. Tverijonas quickly closed out the third set, 6-1, to secure the second straight victory for the Colonials.
With a pair of home victories over the weekend, the Buff and Blue now boast a 4-0 home record between matches at the GW Tennis Center and the indoor Southeast Tennis Center courts.
The Colonials continue their homestand when they host UMBC for a dual match on Friday, April 10 at the GW Tennis Center on the Mount Vernon Campus. Senior Francisco Dias will be recognized prior to the match in a Senior Day presentation.
