GW Baseball Falls in Rubber Match at Mason, 4-3

FAIRFAX, Va. - The George Washington baseball team raced out to a 3-0 lead but was unable to maintain the advantage and fell, 4-3, at George Mason in the rubber match of the three-game series on Sunday afternoon at Spuhler Field.
With the win, George Mason earns the series win and clinches a point in the Revolutionary Rivalry standings. GW still leads the year-long series, 9.5-7.5, with two scoring events remaining.
GW (25-14, 11-6 A-10) built a 3-0 advantage for starter Robbie Metz with single runs in the first, second and fourth innings.
In the first inning, sophomore Joey Bartosic led off with an infield single, stole second and scored on an RBI single by sophomore Bobby Campbell to put GW ahead 1-0.
In the second, sophomore Cody Bryant hit a two-out double and scored on an RBI double by sophomore Eli Kashi for a 2-0 lead.
Bryant struck again with an RBI double in the fourth inning to put the Colonials ahead, 3-0. The run-scoring double drove in sophomore Kevin Mahala, who had reached base on an error to leadoff the inning.
George Mason (18-22-1, 7-8 A-10) plated two runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull within one run of the lead and then tied the game with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to force extra innings. The Patriots scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the 10th to win the series.
Metz went 5.1 innings and allowed two runs on five hits with no walks an seven strikeouts in a no-decision. Senior Craig LeJeune added 2.2 innings of scoreless relief with three strikeouts out of the bullpen.
Sophomore Eddie Muhl, the NCAA saves leader entering the weekend, was hit with the loss after allowing a pair of runs on three hits.
Bartosic picked up his team-leading 18th multiple-hit game of the season by going 2-for-5 with one run and one stolen base.
Bryant finished 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles, one run and one RBI.
The Colonials will host a pair of midweek games at Tucker Field this week against Towson (Tuesday, 3 p.m.) and Coppin State (Wednesday, 3 p.m.).
