NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The George Washington men's tennis squad swept Atlantic 10 weekly awards to close out the regular season, as senior Francisco Dias earned Performer of the Week homors and freshman Christos Hadjigeorgiou garnered the Rookie of the Week nod, the conference announced on Tuesday.
Dias tallied a 3-1 record over the weekend, first notching a doubles victory with freshman partner Chris Fletcher, 8-2, on Saturday at the No. 1 position to help the Colonials earn the early doubles point over A-10 foe George Mason in a Revolutionary Rivalry bout. The Lisbon, Portugal native then downed the Patriots' James Lange, 6-0, 7-5, at the top solo spot as the Buff and Blue cruised to a 6-1 victory over Mason. On Sunday, Dias notched his 85th career singles win - a three-set (6-1, 4-6, 6-2) battle - to break David Haggerty's ('75-'79) career solo wins mark, as the Colonials defeated Georgetown, 6-1.
Hadjigeorgiou went a perfect 3-0 in two singles matches and a doubles bout over the weekend. The Cyprus, Greece, native downed his George Mason foe on Saturday, 6-3, 6-1, in fourth-flight action in the team victory. The rookie paired up with classmate Chris Reynolds on Sunday in an 8-6 win over their Georgetown opponents to help clinch the early point for the Buff and Blue. In the singles slate, Hadjigeorgiou notched a come-from-behind victory (3-6, 6-4, 6-3) in his first No. 3 battle of the season - the highest spot on the ladder the freshman has played this season.
Hadjigeorgiou's performance also earned him ECAC's Division I South Rookie of the Week.
"Francisco is finding his top form heading into the Atlantic 10 Championship and deserves this honor after with his GW record-setting performance," said Head Coach Greg Munoz. "Christos has found new confidence and is playing the way we expect him to play. Heading into the conference tournament with a strong spring finish has given us some needed confidence - I am proud of both Francisco and Christos as well as the team."
The Colonials take a four-match win streak into A-10 Championship play, where GW has earned the No. 4 seed and a bye into Friday's quarterfinal round. The Championships will be held at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio, from April 23-26.
