PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The George Washington baseball team extended its current win streak to five straight games and avenged an early-season loss with a 10-1 victory over UMES on Wednesday afternoon at Hawk Stadium.
GW (22-10) has now won five in a row and 12 of its last 14 games.
Five Colonial pitchers combined to limit UMES (11-23) to one run on seven hits in the victory. Freshman Brady Renner earned the win, his second of the season, with 2.1 innings of scoreless relief. He allowed just one hit with a pair of strikeouts.
The Colonials scored two runs on three hits in the second inning and never looked back en route to the victory. Sophomore Andrew Selby doubled and advanced to third on a balk before scoring on an RBI groundout by sophomore Kevin Mahala for the first run of the day. Later in the inning, following a single and stolen base by freshman Matt Cosentino, sophomore Eli Kashi put GW ahead 2-0 with an RBI single.
UMES got its only run of the game in the bottom of the third before the Colonials blew the game open with three runs in the top of the seventh.
Senior Ryan Xepoleas led off with a single, stole second and scored on an RBI single by Kashi for a 3-1 lead. Sophomore Joey Bartosic then singled to put runners on first and second ahead of sophomore Bobby Campbell, who lined an RBI single to center field to extend the lead to 4-1.
After a pitching change, freshman Brandon Chapman was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Selby followed with a base hit to center field to plate a run for a 5-1 lead.
The Colonials put up five runs on four hits in the top of the eighth to extend the advantage to 10-1. The first run scored on an RBI single by Bartosic, and Campbell had a sacrifice fly for a 7-1 lead.
Chapman added a two-run double, his team-leading 13th of the season, to push the lead to 9-1. Selby was next up and hit an RBI double, his team-best 18th extra-base hit of the season, for the final 10-1 tally.
Campbell (3-for-5, two RBIs), Selby (3-for-5, two RBIs, one double) and Kashi (3-for-4, two runs, two RBIs) all posted three-hit games for the Colonials. Bartosic finished 2-for-5 with two runs and one RBI. Xepoleas went 1-for-2 with two runs, two walks and two stolen bases.
