WASHINGTON - Junior Jacob Williams pitched six innings of scoreless relief and sophomore Eddie Muhl earned his third save of the weekend to set the single-season saves record as the George Washington baseball team clinched the series sweep with a 3-2 win over Dayton on Sunday afternoon at Tucker Field.
GW (21-10, 9-2 A-10) now sits in sole possession of first place in the Atlantic 10 standings, one game ahead of second-place Richmond.
Dayton (9-22, 2-10 A-10) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning before the Colonials seized the lead for good in the bottom half.
Freshman Robbie Metz earned a one-out walk and then advanced to third on a perfectly executed hit and run with sophomore Bobby Campbell. Metz then scored on a balk to tie the game at 1-1. Later in the inning, sophomore Andrew Selby lined a RBI double to right center field to score Campbell and give the Colonials a 2-1 lead.
Junior Shane Kemp worked around a two-on, two-out jam in the top of the second before senior Ryan Xepoleas extended GW's lead to 3-1 with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the inning. The Del Oro, California, native connected on a 1-1 pitch and deposited the ball over the right field fence for his third home run of the season.
In the third, Kemp allowed a single followed by a double to put runners on second and third with one out before Williams entered in relief. Williams allowed a sacrifice fly that made the score 3-2 but retired the side without further damage.
After allowing a one-out single in the top of the fourth, Williams locked in and retired the next 14 batters he faced in order before allowing a leadoff walk in the top of the ninth inning. A sacrifice bunt moved the runner into scoring position but Muhl entered in relief and got the final two outs to clinch the win and his 13th save of the season.
Muhl is now the single-season career saves leader with 13 after recording a save in each of the three wins over Dayton this weekend. On the season he boasts a 0.49 ERA in 18.1 innings with 17 strikeouts and four walks.
Williams allowed just one hit in six scoreless innings of relief to earn his third win of the season.
Xepoleas finished 2-for-3 with one double, one home run and one RBI to pace the offense.
GW will travel to UMES on Wednesday afternoon for a non-conference game at 3:00 p.m. The Hawks defeated the Colonials, 8-3, on March 3.
