GW Baseball Splits Sunday Doubleheader with Manhattan

ARLINGTON, Va. - The George Washington baseball team is 7-3 through its first 10 games for the first time since the 1983 season after splitting Sunday's doubleheader with Manhattan at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park. The Colonials won the first game, 8-4, before falling in the nightcap, 10-3.
Manhattan (2-9) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning of game one before the Colonials responded in the bottom half of the inning on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Bobby Campbell to tie the score.
GW pulled ahead by a 3-1 margin after scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning. Sophomore Andrew Selby hit a one-out triple before scoring on a RBI double by junior Matthieu Robert. Later in the inning, sophomore Eli Kashi delivered a RBI single to put the Colonials on top, 3-1.
The Jaspers retaliated to take a 4-3 lead by plating three runs in the top of the third inning before the Colonials seized the lead for good with a three-run fifth inning.
Sophomore Kevin Mahala led off the bottom of the fifth with his first career home run, a solo shot over the fence to the the power alley in left center field to knot the score at 4-4.
Later in the inning, sophomore Joey Bartosic extended his program-record hit streak to 23 consecutive games with a single to center field. After advancing to second base on an error, Bartosic scored when freshman Robbie Metz ripped a double down the left field line to give the Colonials a 5-4 lead. The next batter was Campbell, who contributed a RBI single to score Metz from second base and put GW on top, 6-4.
The Colonials added single runs in the sixth and eighth innings for the final tally of 8-4. In the sixth, Selby led off with a double and came around to score on a RBI single by Robert. In the eighth, Bartosic added a RBI single.
Junior Jacob Williams earned the win in relief, allowing one earned run on three hits in 2.2 innings of work. Both Campbell (2-for-3) and Robert (3-for-4, one double) finished with two RBIs apiece.
In the second game, Manhattan's Scott McClennan pitched eight strong innings, yielding just one unearned run on six hits to earn the win.
The Jaspers scored three times in the top of the fourth to take a 3-0 lead before GW scored on an error in the bottom half of the inning to cut the deficit to 3-1.
Manhattan used a solo home run in the sixth to push the lead to 4-1 and added four runs in the eighth and two in the ninth to take a 10-1. GW attempted to mount a comeback in the ninth inning as Kashi hit a RBI single and another run scored on an error, but the Jaspers escaped the threat to win the game.
Bartosic extended his hit streak to 24 games with a leadoff single in the eighth inning.
The Colonials are 7-3 through 10 games for the first time since head coach Gregg Ritchie was a freshman during the 1983 season.
GW will head to California on Monday afternoon for a four-game road swing through the Golden State. The Colonials will visit Long Beach State on Wednesday evening at 6:00 p.m. PT before a three-game series at Cal State Northridge beginning on Friday.
