ARLINGTON, Va. - Sophomore Joey Bartosic extended his program-record hit streak to 18 games and junior Matthieu Robert drove in four runs to lead the George Washington baseball team to a 16-7 victory over Niagara in the series opener on Friday afternoon at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park.
GW (3-1) totaled 16 runs on 16 hits and rallied from a 4-1 deficit with seven unanswered runs en route to its third victory of the season. Junior Bobby LeWarne earned the win, his second of the season, after throwing six innings and allowing six runs (five earned) on six hits with one walk and seven strikeouts.
Niagara (0-3) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning before the Colonials tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom half. Freshman Robbie Metz hit a one-out double, advanced to third on a single by sophomore Bobby Campbell and scored on an attempted steal of second base.
The Purple Eagles responded by scoring three runs in the top of the second to take a 4-1 lead, but GW retaliated immediately in the bottom of the second. Senior Ryan Xepoleas led off with a single and scored on freshman Brandon Chapman's RBI double. Sophomore Andrew Selby followed with a triple to deep left field to cut the deficit to 4-3. Following a walk to Robert, sophomore Eli Kashi singled up the middle to drive in Selby and knot the score at 4-4.
Robert provided an RBI single in the bottom of the third inning to give the Colonials a 5-4 lead, and the advantage was extended to 7-4 when GW plated a pair of runs on an error in the outfield.
Xepoleas led off the fifth inning with a triple to the gap in right-center field and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Chapman to push GW's lead to 8-4.
LeWarne retired six consecutive batters across the fifth and sixth innings before Niagara plated three runs in the top of the seventh inning to pull within one run of the lead at 8-7, but the Colonials broke the game open with four runs in both the seventh and eighth innings.
In the seventh, Chapman was hit by a pitch with one out and advanced to third on a double by Selby. Robert then came to the plate and drove a base hit through the left side of the infield to plate two runs, pushing GW's lead to 10-7. Later in the inning, Bartosic extended his hit streak to 18 games with an RBI single, putting GW on top 11-7. After Bartosic stole second, freshman Robbie Metz roped a base hit to left field to score a run and put GW ahead 12-7.
Senior Craig LeJeune worked a scoreless eighth inning before the Colonials struck for four runs again in the bottom of the eighth.
Sophomore Kevin Mahala led off the eighth with a single after grinding his way through a nine-pitch at bat. Consecutive singles by Xepoleas and freshman Matt Cosentino loaded the bases and a run scored when sophomore Andrew Selby was hit by a pitch.
Later in the inning, GW scored on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by Robert to extend the lead to 15-7. Bartosic added an RBI infield single for GW's final run of the afternoon.
Robert finished 2-for-3 with four RBIs and two runs scored while Xepoleas was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and one triple.
GW collected five extra-base hits on the day and had five players record multiple hits in Bartosic, Metz, Xepoleas, Selby and Robert.
GW and Niagara will play the middle game of the three-game series on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
