ARLINGTON, Va. - Three pitchers combined to limit the opposition to zero runs on seven hits as the George Washington baseball team shut out visiting Georgetown, 3-0, on Wednesday afternoon at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park.
Freshman Robbie Metz got the start on the mound for GW (2-1) and responded by tossing five shutout innings. The Poolesville, Maryland, native allowed four hits and recorded one strikeout in a no decision while going 1-for-3 with a double and one run at the plate as the designated hitter.
Metz gave way to junior Shane Kemp who went on to record the victory with 3.1 innings of scoreless relief. The Waterloo, Iowa, native allowed just three hits and one walk with one strikeout.
The two teams battled through six scoreless innings before the Colonials seized the lead in the bottom half of the seventh inning.
Sophomore Andrew Selby hit a one-out triple to the gap in left centerfield to set the Colonials up for their first run of the day. The next batter was freshman Brandon Chapman, who grinded his way through a 10-pitch at-bat before lining a 3-2 pitch to centerfield for his first career RBI, giving the Colonials a 1-0 lead.
Chapman then stole second an advanced to third base on a groundout before being driven in on a RBI single by sophomore Eli Kashi, which extended GW's lead to 2-0.
The Colonials added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth after Metz led the inning off with a double to deep left. He advanced to third on a wild pitch and later scored during a double-play ball to put GW ahead, 3-0.
Kemp ran into trouble in the ninth, allowing two singles, before sophomore Eddie Muhl tallied the final two outs to clinch the game and earn the save.
Kashi finished the day 2-for-3 with one RBI.
The Colonials return to action this weekend at Tucker Field with a three-game series against Niagara. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
