ARLINGTON, Va. - The George Washington baseball team opened the 2015 season by splitting a doubleheader with visiting NJIT on Saturday afternoon at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park.
GW (1-1) won the season-opener, 5-1, before falling in the nightcap, 6-2.
Sophomore Joey Bartosic set a new program record by extending his current hitting streak to 16 consecutive games, dating back to April 22 of last season. The 2014 Atlantic 10 All-Rookie selection tied the program record, shared by Tyler McCarthy, Tom Shanley and Andrew Abokhair, with a leadoff single in the bottom of the first inning of game one before a leadoff single in the bottom of the first of game two set the record.
In the two games, Bartosic finished 5-for-9 with two runs, one walk and one stolen base.
Junior Bobby LeWarne earned the win in game one with seven innings of one-run ball. He allowed just three hits on the day with two walks and six strikeouts.
NJIT (1-1) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning before the Colonials retaliated, grabbing the lead for good, with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first.
Bartosic singled to lead off the second and advanced to second on an infield single by freshman Robbie Metz. After a double steal, sophomore Bobby Campbell tied the game with a RBI groundout. Later in the inning, senior Ryan Xepoleas delivered a RBI single to left field to put the Colonials ahead 2-1.
GW struck again in the bottom of the second inning, taking advantage of a pair of throwing errors to score a run and push the lead to 3-1.
The Colonials pushed across two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. With one out and a man on first base, Xepoleas drove the first pitch he saw to deep center field to record a RBI triple before scoring on an error when the Highlander's centerfielder misplayed the ball.
LeWarne did not allow a hit after the fourth inning before giving way to sophomore Eddie Muhl to open the top of eighth. Muhl went on two pitch two scoreless innings, allowing a pair of hits with two strikeouts, to clinch the win for the Colonials.
GW jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom half of the first inning of game two in a sequence started by Bartosic's leadoff single. Metz followed with a single to left center field, moving to second on the throw while Bartosic advanced to third. Campbell drove in a run with a RBI groundout for the first run of the inning before sophomore Kevin Mahala provided a RBI single to extend the lead to 2-0.
Freshman Kevin Hodgson allowed an unearned run in the top of the second inning before NJIT tied the score at 2-2 with a RBI single in the fourth. In his collegiate debut, Hodgson went four innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits with one walk and one strikeout.
The Highlanders added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to extend their lead to 4-2 before pushing a pair of runs across in the top of the ninth to earn the 6-2 victory.
Metz recorded four hits across the doubleheader in his collegiate debut while Xepoleas collected three hits on the day.
Sunday's scheduled game three between GW and NJIT has been cancelled due to expected low temperatures, below zero wind chill and high winds.
The Colonials return to action on Wednesday afternoon against Georgetown at Tucker Field. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
