WASHINGTON - The defending Atlantic 10 champion George Washington men's tennis team will host five matches this spring in a challenging dual match slate littered with ranked opponents from last season.
The Colonials open the spring schedule at home as MTSU visits the indoor Southeast Tennis and Learning Center on Thursday, Jan. 28, before traveling south for a pair of matches at Southern Mississippi (Jan. 30) and Mississippi State on Saturday (Jan. 31). Mississippi State wrapped the 2015 spring in the second round of the NCAA Tournament and ranked No. 23 in the ITA, marking the first of five year-end ranked opponents that GW is scheduled to face.
"We have put together a very exciting schedule, playing some different teams than in the past to help us gain more national exposure," said 10th-year head coach Greg Munoz. "Mississippi State, a program that finished last year's regular season in the top 20, Southern Miss and Southern Methodist in Texas, as our trip west during spring break to face Pacific, San Francisco and Nevada-Reno will highlight this year's schedule."
The Buff and Blue briefly return home on Saturday, Feb. 13, for an indoor bout against Morgan State before beginning an eight-match road trip at 2015 NCAA Tournament qualifier St. John's on Saturday, Feb. 20.
The Colonials then visit SMU to take on the host Mustangs on Saturday, Feb. 27, and remain on campus for a neutral-site battle with Texas A&M - Corpus Christi the next day. SMU finished last season with a No. 47 ranking, while Texas A&M-CC owned the No. 56 slot.
GW competes in the DMV the following weekend, taking on its first Atlantic 10 opponent of the season on the road at Richmond on Saturday, March 5, before visiting UMBC the following day.
The long stretch of away play concludes on the West Coast, with visits to last year's No. 51-ranked University of San Francisco (March 16), Pacific (March 19) and a match against the University of Nevada at Pacific's courts in Stockton, California (March 20).
The Buff and Blue return home for a pair of contests, as the Colonials face crosstown rival Georgetown outdoors at the GW Tennis Center on Friday, March 25, followed by a Saturday bout with UMES in the first half of a doubleheader that will finish with a match at Revolutionary Rival George Mason later in the afternoon.
GW wraps its road season with a trio of contests, starting at East Carolina on Friday, April 1, followed by visits to UNC-Wilmington (April 2) and UNC-Greensboro (April 3). UNCW finished the spring of 2015 with a No. 74 ITA ranking.
The Colonials conclude the regular season with a home Atlantic 10 bout with Duquesne on April 10, before traveling to the Boar's Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Virginia, where GW will defend its Atlantic 10 title during the conference tournament from April 14-17.
